La phrase interrogative in French

On this french language course you will learn La phrase interrogative. It's about interrogative sentences.

When you visit France for vocation or office work, of  course there are certain informations that you want to know. In this thing, you use interrogative sentences.

So we can conclude that interrogative sentence is used to ask question or ask for information where it ends with a question mark "?".

How to ask question in french ?

There are three ways to ask question:
  • Using "est-ce-que" in front of sentence
  • Inversion of subject and verb
  • Using affirmation (intonation)

Using "est-ce-que"

  • Vous habitez à Paris (You live in Paris).
  • est-ce que vous habitez à Paris ? (Do you live in Paris ?).

  • Desy aime la peinture (Desy  likes painting)
  • est-ce que wati aime la peinture ? (Does Desy like painting?).

est-ce que becomes est-ce qu' when it is followed by vowel after que. Here are some examples:
  • Ils vendent des timbres (They sell stamps).
  • est-ce qu'ils vendent des timbres  ? (Do they sell stamps ?).

  • Il joue au football (He plays football)
  • est-ce qu'il joue au football ? (Does he play football)

  • Elle joue au piano (She plays piano).
  • est-ce qu'elle joue au piano  ? (Does she play piano ?).

  • Tu écoutes le discours du président (You listen to the president's speech)
  • est-ce que tu écoutes le discours du président ? (Do you listen to the president's speech ?)

  • Elle annule son voyage au Brésil (She cancels her trip to Brazil).
  • est-ce qu'elle annule son voyage au Brésil ? (Does she cancel her trip to Brazil ?).

Inversion of subject and verb

In this case, we make questions by inverting the conjugated verb and the subject pronoun. Here are some examples :
  • Tu participes à toutes nos réunion.  (You participate in all our meetings).
  • Participes-tu à toutes nos réunion ? (Do you participate in all our meetings ?).

  • Vous habitez à Bali (Anda tinggal di Bali).
  • Habitez-vous à Bali  (Do you live in Bali ? ).

If conjugated verb ends with vowel and subject starts with vowel, then the consonant "t" must be added. Here are some examples:
  • Elle parle russe (He speaks Russian).
  • Parle-t-elle russe ? (Does he speak Russian ?).

  • Il souvent voyage en europe  (He often travels to Europe).
  • Voyage-t-il souvent en europe ? (Does he often travel to Europe ?).

  • il a habité en France ((I used to live in France).
  • A-t-il habité en France?   (Did he live in France in the past ?).

Using Affirmation (Intonation)

The easiest way to ask a question, we just raise the voice at the end of the sentence. When speaking, intonation is incredibly important, so in this case just changing the tone of your voice indicates a question. Here are some examples :

  • Tu participes à toutes nos réunion. (You participate in all our meetings).
  • Tu participes à toutes nos réunion ? (Do you participate in all our meetings ?).

  • Elle est avec toi. (She is with you).
  • Elle est avec toi ?. (Is she with you ?).

  • Elle parle russe (She speaks Russian).
  • Elle parle russe  ? (Does she speaks Russian?).

  • Il souvent voyage en europe  (He often travels to Europe).
  • Il souvent voyage en europe ? (Does he often travel to Europe ?).

  • Vous parlez français . (You speak French ).
  • Vous parlez français ?. (You speak French ? ).
